252 Aggie students responded to Coach Jackie Sherrill’s “No Experience Required” ad in Texas A&M’s student newspaper for his new concept of a 12th Man Kickoff Team in 1983. Soon, those applicants would be narrowed down to the 17 walk-ons who made the cut to cover kickoffs at Kyle Field and wear the “12th Man” badge of honor on their sleeves. The Aggies famously only gave up 13.1 yards per return that first season and would lead the country in covering kickoffs twice over the next five seasons. We celebrate the memory and spirit of that team and the entire student body on the 100th Anniversary of E. King Gill’s willingness to serve in Texas A&M’s win over undefeated Centre College in the 1922 Dixie Classic.
